7 months old is the perfect age for a photo session. Usually at this age they'll happily sit and interact and then scoot around for a while too.

Yes, it looks like he's balancing precariously in a tree. No, he really isn't.

And the one on the right is the look you get when you're bribing your kid with Smarties and they wonder where the last one went. :)
Great photos Jenn, he's so adorable and look how big he's getting!
Oh my goodness...he's getting so big! And he's so cute! Watch out for those girls calling all the time when he gets older!! Love those dimples!
And great Photoshop work...I can't tell where you might have done anything (being the Photoshop guru that I am...haha!).

He is sooooooo adorable - I love the eye you have for different angles! Amazing work, Jen!

If you haven't entered the Yoyomama contest yet, head over now and post your comment. The contest ends Tuesday so you only have a few more days.
We were out enjoying the sun at the year-end bbq for our daycare today. Great weather and so much fun to see Angelo playing with all his little friends. A quick one from this afternoon....

Shannon is the most amazing make-up artist ever. I was fortunate enough to meet her 7 years ago and haven't had to pick out my own make-up since (thank goodness since picking make-up that will look fabulous on me is not a skill I have). She even drove up to Whistler to do the make-up at my wedding.

This little guy loves grass. Literally. Like he ate it constantly. Even when we were all starting to get red eyes and sniffly noses from all the grass and cotton he was still chowing down.
Hello sunshine!
I've heard stories about an amazing red barn out at Campbell Valley Park (which is way further away than you think it's going to be) and I was on the hunt. After wandering around the main part of the park for a while, we hopped in our cars and headed out to find the barn. We spotted it and I was in love. And Shannon was in love with this gorgeous yellow school house.

Aren't they a gorgeous family?!

Thanks Jenn..... They look great so far! Cant wait to see the rest! I cant beleive you made damon look good thru the red eyes and snot bubbles!
Gorgeous photos Jenn...I esp. love the last one. Great perspective, love that barn in the background
Oh, you make me want to shoot with a wide angle lens...these are gorgeous!
You've booked your session and you're excited that you're finally going to have great portraits of your family adorning your home, when suddenly you get a sinking feeling in your stomach. What are you going to wear?
This is definitely the question I get asked about most often. Today I'll go through some general tips about what to wear for your family portrait session. Watch for upcoming blog posts about what to wear for maternity sessions and newborn sessions.
Remember, colour is a good thing! When most people look at my photographs, the first thing they comment on is how colourful they are. While I do bring in lots of colour from wherever we're doing you session, the more colour your wear the more fun and vibrant your images tend to be.
Patterns are also a good thing - especially on kids. Personally I think there is nothing cuter than plaid shorts on little boys or polka dots on little girls.
So colour and patterns are good but how does that help me? I suggest you start with a colourful patterned piece of clothing you love for your children and pull colours out of that when you're coming up with the outfits for the grownups.
Try to think of everyone's outfits combined as one big outfit. If you put all the pieces of clothing that all the members of your family will be wearing during our photo session in a big pile on your bed, you want the pile to be colourful and have some variety but still look fairly pleasing all together.
Here is an example from the JCrew Crewcuts May catalogue. While there's no pattern, there is lots of colour without everyone being too matchy matchy.

And if you happen to be browsing through the May 2009 Crewcuts catalogue online, check out the adorable tutus for girls on pages 8 and 9. I would love to a session with two girls in those tutus!
I'm not a big one for rules but there are a few you need to think about....
- Avoid words or big logos on clothing. Your eye will immediately jump to them.
- Avoid obvious trends. These images are going to be on your wall for a long time to come so you don't want to look at them a year from now and say "what was I thinking".
- Dads - do not wear white socks with darker pants and darker shoes. I know, this one goes without saying everyday but seriously, check the socks before you leave the house.
- Another for dads - take off the wristwatch. Unless your watch was specifically put on to be part of your outfit, take it off for the two hours we'll be together. Your eye will immediately go to the big black thing on your wrist when you're looking at your images.
- This one is going to be a bit controversial but here goes... you wouldn't all dress in the same thing when you're heading to the mall on the weekend so why would you do it when you're having your family portraits done? Your family is so much more fun and interesting than every family member in white shirts and jeans!
I do a planning session with all my clients before their actual photo session. Use this opportunity to pull some outfits out of your closets. I'm happy to looking through them and tell you what will look great and what you might want to add.
My final advice... be yourselves. Wear what you're comfortable in - but jazzed up a bit. If the thought of colour in your closet makes you cringe, add a colourful necklace or scarf.
If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below and I'll make sure and answer them in a future post.
this is such fantastic advice. i once asked our photographer for help before pictues. she wasn't much help and we ended up wearing white shirts and jeans. I hate those pictures. :(
So I've decided to let you guys make me accountable. From now until the end of June, if I don't post at least two times per week (a week is Sunday to Saturday), the first person to email and call me on it gets a free session. Hopefully that will move blogging closer to the top of my list!
And because no post is complete without a photograph, here is Angelo trying to show us how old he is. For the longest time he hasn't been able to hold his other fingers down in order to make a two. Now he can but it takes a lot of concentration. :)

Yeah! An update. Great photo!! I love the photo...even the little stray hairs are in focus!
oooh, can i win?!?! i wanna have a photo shoot with you! :)
adorable photo! i can't get over how big he is - 2 already?!?!

I love the photo of them all skipping rocks!! I love them all actually, but that one is super cool! I love that you caught them all at the perfect time. And they look so happy in the engagement photos!
Thanks so much! These are perfect and better than I could have ever imagined. I love how you caught us all doing something we do everytime we go to the beach. Skipping rocks is our things.
Oh my goodness, Jenn! These are just absolutely AMAZING! WOW!

Adorable!!!
I was thinking I should get you to take photos of Colin and I (and Chloe maybe) towards the end of the summer, after Colin's surgery. :)
